The chalky crust on the base of your kettle, the white flakes in your tea and the kettle that has started to rattle and take longer to boil are all the same problem: limescale. How fast it builds depends on where you live. What Limescale Is and Why Your Kettle Grows It

Tap water carries dissolved calcium and magnesium; the more it carries, the "harder" it is, and the NHMRC guidelines note that hardness forms scale on hot water pipes and fittings. Heat is the trigger. As Professor Stuart Khan explained to ABC News, hardness becomes less soluble as water is heated, so calcium carbonate drops out of solution onto the hottest surface in the kettle — the element or base disc.

That is why the crust starts on the base, and why a scaled kettle gets noisy: the rough deposit gives steam bubbles more places to form. Calcium carbonate is essentially chalk, and chalk dissolves in acid. Scrubbing chips at it and scratches the kettle; bicarb soda (baking soda) and dishwashing liquid do nothing to it. Only an acid takes it off cleanly.

Is Limescale Harmful to Drink?

Australia's drinking-water guidelines treat hardness as an aesthetic issue, not a health one. The NHMRC sets its 200 mg/L guideline on aesthetic grounds only, with no health-based value. Urban Utilities, which supplies Brisbane, states that hard water does not show any adverse health effects and describes the taste as chalky. Professor Khan, a water-quality engineer at UNSW when he spoke to the ABC in 2022, called moderately hard water more of a nuisance than a public health problem.

The nuisance has a cost. The Breville manual warns that scale may damage the element, affects efficiency and may invalidate the warranty; Which? says a scaled element takes longer and uses more energy to boil (no source gives a percentage).

How to Descale a Kettle with Vinegar

This follows the Kmart sequence. A habit professional cleaners share: start this job first, so the hour-long soak runs while you clean the rest of the kitchen.

Step 1: Unplug, cool and empty the kettle

Switch off at the power point, unplug, and let the kettle cool completely. Tip out any standing water and lift out the spout filter if it removes easily.

Step 2: Mix 1 part white vinegar with 3 parts water in a jug

You need only about 700 ml — roughly 175 ml of vinegar and 525 ml of water. Kmart's manual specifies three-to-one water and vinegar, mixed in a jug first; Which? uses equal parts. Start at 1:3; if a thick crust survives the first hour, refill at equal parts and soak again.

Step 3: Fill only to the MIN line and leave it for an hour

Pour the solution in only up to the MIN mark — 0.7 litres on the Kmart kettle; the scale sits on the base, so the solution only needs to cover it. Leave it about an hour, the manual's own guidance.

Step 4: Bring it to the boil once, then tip it out

Open a window or run the rangehood — hot vinegar steam is sharp, and unpleasant for anyone with a sensitive chest. Plug the kettle in and boil it, let it cool briefly, then pour the solution down the sink. If patches remain, refill to MIN with fresh solution for another hour rather than reaching for a scourer.

Step 5: Rinse, then boil two kettles of fresh water and discard them

Rinse the inside, fill to MAX with fresh water, boil, pour it away, and repeat. Which? suggests two or three fresh boils so your tea doesn't taste of vinegar; plastic usually needs the third.

Step 6: Clean the spout filter and the lid seam

The mesh in the spout catches loose flakes as you pour, and a blocked filter is the usual reason a freshly descaled kettle still pours slowly. Kmart's manual says to pull the sieve out and rinse it under running hot water; use the toothbrush on any crust, and wipe the underside of the lid and the rim.

How to Descale a Kettle with Citric Acid (Best for Plastic and Glass)

If hot vinegar puts you off, or your plastic kettle holds odours, citric acid is the better choice: it leaves no smell or taste behind. Dissolve 1–2 tablespoons in about a litre of warm water, pour it in up to the MIN line, and boil. Which? uses one to two tablespoons in a half-full, just-boiled kettle, left for 15–20 minutes. Lemon and Commercial Descalers

Lemon juice is citric acid in a weaker, sweeter form. For scale you can feel with a fingernail, Which? suggests 50/50 lemon juice and water, boiled and left for about 30 minutes. Strain out the pips or they end up in the filter.

Commercial descalers are fastest on a heavily scaled kettle. The Breville routine is a worked example: 60 ml of kettle cleaner per litre of water, boil, stand 30 minutes, boil again, empty, then boil and discard one kettle of fresh water. Descaling powders and liquids are stronger than pantry acids: read the packet, wear gloves with liquids, never exceed the dose.

A Which? investigation into why glass kettles shatter found that a knock, or simply putting the kettle down with force, can start tiny cracks; it advises refilling with lukewarm water or letting the kettle cool first, avoiding scouring pads and brushes, and — on Russell Hobbs' advice — filling through the lid rather than knocking the spout on the tap. Breville's manual adds: do not knock the glass on a hard surface or drop the kettle.

  • Bleach. No reason to put it in a drinking vessel, and it must never meet vinegar or citric acid.

  • Steel wool or scourers inside the kettle. Scratches give the next layer of scale a foothold, and both manuals ban them.

  • The dishwasher. Not for the kettle, and never for the power base.

  • Soaking a plastic kettle overnight in vinegar. It works on the scale and leaves a taste that takes several rinse boils to clear.

  • Running the kettle empty to "burn off" scale. The Kmart manual says never operate the kettle without water; if the overheat cut-out trips, let it cool at least 15 minutes before refilling.
