Canvas shoes pick up mud, grass marks and everyday scuffs, but the right cleaning method depends on the brand, material and construction. This guide covers white and coloured canvas shoes across brands. The video below demonstrates one example: a gentle hand clean of Optical White Converse Chuck Taylor All Star canvas low-tops. Check the instructions for your own pair before following any demonstration.

Quick answer: Check your shoe maker's care guidance, remove loose dirt and test the recommended cleaner on a hidden area. Where hand cleaning is permitted, work gently in small sections and remove cleaner residue as directed. Wash laces separately and let the shoes dry completely before wearing. Do not assume that canvas means machine-washable, bleach-safe or suitable for soaking.
Check the Brand and Materials First
Canvas describes the upper fabric, not the whole shoe. A pair may also have suede trim, leather, printed finishes, glued components or a fixed insole. Instructions for a plain canvas upper may not suit those other parts.
- Converse canvas: The manufacturer's cleaning guide uses a little mild dish soap in lukewarm water, a hidden-area test and gentle cleaning with a damp cloth or soft brush. It says not to machine wash or dry, and to avoid direct heat. This is the approach demonstrated in our video.
- Superga: Superga Australia's care guidance recommends sneaker-specific cleaning products and advises against machine washing. Its UK canvas-care guide describes gentle cleaning with a damp soft cloth and mild detergent, followed by natural drying away from heat and direct sunlight. Check the guidance supplied with your Australian pair before choosing a product.
- Other brands and mixed-material styles: Find the care page for the exact model, check any supplied instructions, or ask the manufacturer. Do not infer permission to use a machine or stain remover from another brand's advice.
What You'll Need
- The cleaner recommended for your shoes, plus water at the specified temperature.
- Clean, soft cloths: one for loose dirt, one for cleaning and another for removing residue.
- A soft brush only where the shoe maker permits it.
- A small bowl, a clean towel and somewhere to leave the shoes undisturbed.
- Paper towels or another shape support permitted by the maker.
Follow the cleaning product's handling precautions. Keep it away from children and pets, and do not mix cleaners. A laundry stain remover's suitability for clothing does not establish its suitability for a finished shoe.
Step 1: Remove Laces and Check the Insoles

Take out the laces so that you can reach around the eyelets and tongue. Set them aside for separate cleaning.
Only remove an insole if it is designed to come out and its care instructions allow removal. Leave fixed or uncertain insoles in place; do not pull them loose. The Converse pair in the video keeps its insoles installed. A different pair with removable insoles may need a separate cleaning method.
Step 2: Lift Off Loose Dirt
Before wet cleaning, gently lift dry debris from the upper and sole with your cloth or permitted soft brush. Avoid forceful scrubbing around stitching and worn fabric.
Keep the cloth used on the dirty outsole separate from the cloth for the upper. That helps you avoid carrying loosened grime back onto the canvas.
Step 3: Test, Then Clean Gently
Prepare the product according to both its directions and the shoe maker's advice. There is no universal capful-to-water recipe: concentrations differ between products.
Test a concealed patch and check for colour transfer or a material change before continuing. Clean a small area at a time, using gentle pressure. Wipe off residue as the maker directs; do not automatically immerse the shoes or rinse the entire pair under a tap.
In the video, a damp cloth is used on the canvas and rubber, followed by a fresh cloth dampened with clean water. Earth Choice Sensitive Concentrated Dishwashing Liquid is the demonstration's mild-soap example. This is not an endorsement by Converse or a recommendation for every brand of shoe.
Step 4: Treat Remaining Marks Cautiously
White canvas is not automatically safe to bleach. Coloured canvas, trims and prints can also react differently to a cleaner. We do not recommend a general chlorine-bleach dilution, oxygen-bleach soak or laundry stain-remover recipe for all canvas shoes.
If the gentle clean leaves a mark, check whether the manufacturer recommends a specific next step. Follow that product's directions and test first. Do not increase the concentration, mix products or scrub harder simply because the first attempt did not remove everything.
Some discolouration and wear may remain. Covering a mark with paint or polish is a cosmetic alteration, not a cleaning result, and may change the finish.
Step 5: Clean the Laces and Dry Everything

Clean the laces separately using a method suitable for their material. Rinse away the cleaner and leave them to dry.
For the Converse demonstration, paper towels help support the shape while the shoes dry at room temperature; replace damp paper as needed. There is no hairdryer, heater, washing machine or tumble dryer in this method. Re-lace only when the shoes and laces are fully dry.
Follow your own brand's drying instructions. Drying time varies with the construction, moisture and room conditions, so an exact number of hours would be misleading. Avoid packing the shoes so tightly that their shape is distorted.
Keeping Canvas Shoes Cleaner Between Cleans
Remove loose dirt promptly, let damp shoes dry before storing them and alternate pairs when practical. If you want to use a protector, check that both the shoe maker and product directions allow it on every material present. A protector is not a substitute for cleaning.
Clean according to use and visible soil rather than following a rigid weekly schedule. If you are organising the rest of the household routine too, our family cleaning guide can help you plan manageable tasks.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can canvas shoes go in the washing machine?
Only if the manufacturer explicitly permits it for that pair, using its specified settings. The Converse and Superga guidance reviewed here advises against machine washing. A mesh bag or cold cycle does not override that restriction.
Why did my white shoes turn yellow?
Discolouration can have more than one cause, and appearance alone cannot identify it. Check the cleaning and drying instructions before trying another treatment. Do not assume that more bleach will restore the colour or that all yellowing can be reversed.
Can I use bicarb, Napisan or a clothing stain remover?
Do not treat these as universal canvas-shoe cleaners. Use them only when your shoe maker and the exact product directions support that use. The Converse video does not use them.
Does the video apply to all canvas shoes?
It demonstrates the researched method for the featured Converse canvas pair. The written guide explains the checks to make for other brands, mixed materials and removable insoles. Where your maker's instructions differ, follow those instructions.
What if the shoes still smell?
Check that the interior is fully dry and follow the manufacturer's insole-care advice. If odour persists, ask about an approved cleaning treatment or replacement insole. Do not assume that pouring powder or disinfectant inside is suitable.
