Homemade dishwasher tablets: should you make them?

Considering DIY dishwasher tablets? Check manufacturer guidance, detergent alternatives and the difference between machine detergent and washing-up liquid.

Homemade dishwasher tablets look like a simple way to replace a bought product. Before mixing a batch, check a more useful question: does your dishwasher manufacturer support the ingredients and dose? This guide evaluates that choice; it does not supply a tested homemade formulation.

Should you make your own dishwasher tablets?

Our recommendation is to use a detergent intended for automatic dishwashers and follow your appliance manual. Whirlpool explicitly advises against homemade detergent because of possible internal damage. That is manufacturer guidance, not evidence that every homemade mixture will damage every machine.

Bosch Australia lists tablets, powder and liquid dishwasher detergent as options in its general guidance, while excluding washing-up liquid. Your own model's manual takes priority over a general article, including this one.

Dishwasher detergent and washing-up liquid are different products

The word “liquid” is not enough to identify the right product. Look for automatic-dishwasher use on the label. Liquid sold for washing dishes in the sink is not an interchangeable substitute. Bosch's guidance makes that distinction explicit.

A homemade tablet also needs more than a firm shape and familiar ingredients to establish suitability. We have not tested cleaning performance, residues, material compatibility or repeated use of a DIY recipe. Without that evidence, we cannot claim equivalent results, a safe universal dose or savings per successful wash.

What to do when you have run out of tablets

First check whether your manual permits a different automatic-dishwasher detergent format, such as powder. Use that product's instructions and your manual's dose guidance; do not assume that a spoonful of another product equals one tablet.

If you do not have a suitable detergent, washing the dishes by hand is an alternative. Keep washing-up liquid for the sink. If an unsuitable product has already gone into the machine, consult the manufacturer's instructions or support before running another cycle.

A practical checklist before choosing a detergent

Identify your dishwasher model and find its detergent instructions. Check the product label for automatic-dishwasher use. Follow the specified dose and storage directions. If you are changing formats or using a short programme, check the model's guidance rather than relying on an online substitution recipe.

Cleaning the machine is a separate job

Detergent for a load of dishes and a product or procedure for cleaning the dishwasher itself serve different purposes. If your issue is a dirty filter, residue or an odour, use the appliance-cleaning guide and the model manual rather than substituting a DIY tablet.

Does homemade detergent void the warranty?

There is no universal warranty answer in the sources reviewed here. Check the terms and manufacturer guidance for your actual model. This article does not make a blanket warranty claim.
