Organise pet supplies with a practical storage station

Build a useful pet-supply station from a drawer unit or cart, with clear zones, simple labels and an easy cleaning routine.

Part 5 of 5 in the cleaning with pets series. It starts with How to Keep Your House Clean With Pets.

Give the everyday supplies one home

A pet-supply station works when the things you need for an ordinary walk or cleanup are easy to reach and easy to put away. Choose a dry place near the route you already use. A small drawer unit, cabinet or stable cart can work; use furniture you own before buying more.

Following an older Organization by the Ocean link? Simply Maid acquired that domain and wrote this new resource. The former personal blog and its author, Victoria Snow, are independent of Simply Maid. We have not reused her project photographs or presented her work as ours. The archived doggie-station project repurposed a scrapbook drawer tower. The layout below is our original adaptation of that useful storage idea.

Sort before measuring

Gather leads, harnesses, toys, grooming tools, bags and pet towels. Put damaged items aside for a repair or replacement decision. Keep medicines, cleaning products and anything a pet could swallow in suitable secure storage, following their labels. A low open basket is not appropriate for everything.

Measure the largest item in each group and the available furniture space. Check drawer movement, load limits and stability. Use manufacturer instructions for securing furniture; keep heavy supplies low and do not hang a lead from a handle if pulling it could tip the unit. A cart should not roll into a walkway when a drawer opens.

ADULT ACCESS

Treat this as a floor plan for your supplies, not a fixed height or weight specification. Leave the top mostly clear so the drawer unit does not become another landing pile. Food stays in storage suitable for its packaging instructions; keep its product and expiry information accessible.

Set up and test the station

  1. Empty the unit and clean it using its finish-specific instructions. Let it dry.
  2. Fit removable trays or dividers without forcing drawers or covering safety labels.
  3. Return one category at a time and put the most-used items where you naturally reach.
  4. Label the front rather than hiding labels under a pile.
  5. Rehearse leaving for a walk and returning with wet gear. Give wet towels a separate drying place.
  6. Review after a week: move a category if you repeatedly leave it somewhere else.

Print or copy the labels WALK, GROOM, PLAY and TOWELS onto cards you can replace. Add a short contents list inside a shared drawer so everyone can reset it without guessing.

Make cleaning part of the reset

Remove loose hair and grit from the empty trays with a suitable dry tool. Clean washable accessories according to their own instructions; do not assume toys, brushes and fabric items share a wash method. Return them only when dry. Keep the routine small: one tray during an ordinary tidy is easier than emptying the whole station every weekend.
