Tax, ABN and insurance

You're an independent contractor: your ABN, your tax, your GST. Insurance is covered — $10M public liability on every job.

Updated Sep 2, 2026

You're a contractor, not an employee

  • You need an ABN. We can't pay you without one.

  • You handle your own tax. Declare everything you earn through Simply Maid in your tax return. Business expenses — products, equipment, car costs, phone — are usually deductible; ask an accountant.

  • Simply Maid doesn't withhold tax or pay super. Your Payment Summary emails are your record of what you were paid; they're not tax invoices.

  • GST is your responsibility. You only need to register once you earn over the ATO threshold ($75,000 a year).

  • Each year we lodge a Taxable Payments Annual Report (TPAR) with the ATO listing what we paid you. Make sure the ABN on your profile is correct.

For tax advice, talk to an accountant or the ATO — we can't advise you.

Insurance

  • Every Simply Maid job is covered by $10 million public liability insurance, underwritten by Chubb. It covers accidental damage to a customer's property and injury to third parties while you're working a Simply Maid booking.

  • You contribute $2.50 in each month you're paid — it appears on your pay run as "10m insurance coverage". There's nothing to contribute in a month with no pay, or when a pay run is under $50.

  • The cover is for Simply Maid jobs only. Private work isn't covered.

  • To make a claim, just Report a breakage in the app — we handle the rest.

You don't need to buy your own public liability policy to work with us.
