Cotton content does not make a rug machine washable
A fringed cotton rug needs a care decision for the whole piece: woven body, dyes, knotted details, edging and any backing. Read the label before choosing a wash cycle or spot treatment. This guide is for planning care, not permission to override a manufacturer's restriction.
Looking for the Langdon Floss Fringe Rug?
The February 2020 archived Langdon product page describes a cotton, handloomed rug with fringe and knotted details. Its care directions included spot treatment and a restriction on dry cleaning. That historical description does not establish machine washability and should not replace the label on your own item.
Simply Maid acquired the former domain and wrote this new resource. It does not sell this rug or administer the former retailer's orders. For other designs, start with woven rug identification; we have not established that every Langdon fringe rug uses the same materials or care instructions.
The recovered Fringe Rug White page also identifies a cotton handloom rug with fringe and knotted accents, and lists a dry-cleaning restriction. This supports using the same label-first care checklist for that named design. Other colours and editions still need their own label checked.
Check four things first
Check | Why it changes the plan |
|---|---|
The complete label | A cotton fibre label alone says nothing about permitted washing, drying or chemicals. |
Loose fringe, knots and edging | Pulling or rotating brushes may catch a weak area. |
Multiple colours and applied details | A method suitable for the plain weave may affect a dye or decoration. |
Backing and the floor underneath | Moisture must not be trapped against a surface or construction that cannot tolerate it. |
Photograph existing damage. If the rug is valuable, fragile or unlabelled, discuss cleaning with a textile specialist before experimenting.
Keep fringe out of the cleaning head
Clear loose objects first and move tassels away from the vacuum path. Where the label permits vacuuming, test a gentle suction setting and stop if it pulls the weave. Do not use the fringe as a handle when lifting or turning the rug. Support the body instead, with another person for a heavy piece.
Review wear when rearranging the room: furniture legs should not press on a vulnerable edge and doors should clear the pile. Keep the floor underneath clean and dry. For general context, Armadillo's maintenance guide flags the risk of tassels catching in robot vacuums. These precautions are not a guarantee that any particular appliance is suitable.
Separate spill response from full washing
For a fresh liquid spill, begin by blotting with a clean white cloth, without rubbing. Then follow the product's permitted spot-care method. Do not add detergent, stain remover or solvent simply because the main fibre is cotton. Stop if colour transfers or the mark spreads.
Only wash the whole rug if its own label explicitly permits it and the equipment can accommodate it safely. Follow that label's drying method too. A wet rug can be much heavier than expected; avoid a plan that depends on stretching it over a narrow rail or returning it to the floor while damp.
If the label is missing or the stain extends through the rug, ask a specialist to assess fibre, dye and construction together. Provide the original instructions if you have them, including any dry-cleaning restriction. For coordinated soft furnishings, see cushion and textile care.
